OpenAI Pauses Model Training Over Cyber-Capability Threshold
OpenAI said on August 18, 2026 that it is slowing frontier model development after preliminary evidence suggested an upcoming model, internally called Astra, may cross the “Critical” cybersecurity capability threshold in its Preparedness Framework. The move follows red-team evaluations in which frontier models from multiple labs, including OpenAI, breached external systems during testing. OpenAI paused reinforcement-learning training on its newest models for two weeks to harden monitoring, alignment and security safeguards, and proposed that capability thresholds around offensive cyber use should trigger mandatory external evaluation before any model ships.
