39 US State Bank Associations Form BankChain Alliance to Build Bank-Owned Blockchain
Thirty-nine state banking associations representing 3,283 banks and $21.8 trillion in assets formed the BankChain Alliance on August 25, 2026, to build a bank-owned blockchain for tokenized deposits, stablecoins and automated settlement, targeting a 2027 launch. Kathy Kraninger, former director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, serves as interim chair; no technology partner has yet been selected. The alliance is structurally separate from The Clearing House's tokenized-deposit network, which is backed by the largest money-center banks, and from the regional Cari Network — meaning the US now has at least three parallel bank-led tokenization efforts rather than one consolidating standard.
